INSPIRATORY MUSCLE TRAINING
When training for a marathon or other rigorous sporting event, you usually just up your mileage or weights for improvement. With Inspiratory Muscle Therapy (IMT), you can exercise your lungs to a higher capacity the same way you would work your biceps for bigger arms. Increasing your lung capacity will allow for you to perform harder, longer and faster with less fatigue. If you are looking to improve your high intensity athletic performance and beat your competitors with a new angle, IMT could be for you.
Who Can Benefit from IMT?
- Athletes who perform high intensity sports.
- Athletes who want to improve their endurance and performance.
- Athletes who are injured but want to maintain their fitness.
- Patients struggling with COPD, chronic heart failure and cystic fibrosis.
Why Train Your Respiratory Muscles?
- Increase your breathing volume– When increasing the intensity of your exercise, your lungs will contract more rapidly and forcefully, through training, your lungs will become stronger.
- Improved Performance- With stronger breathing, you can focus more on your performance than running out of breath.
- Improved Endurance- Stronger lungs equal longer amounts of exercise without fatigue.
- Improved Training- You can train harder with stronger lungs
- Improved Overall Fitness– You will be able to train harder which will result in improved performance and endurance which helps your overall fitness.
- Maintain Fitness– When taking time away from working out due to an injury, maintain your fitness with IMT.
What Exactly is IMT?
- IMT is a computer program that follows the principles of muscle training as outlined by the American College of Sports Medicine 2010.
- Clinical studies have shown that to gain maximum benefits is to use a training load of 80%.
- IMT assesses a patient’s maximum capability and sets a training load of 80% along with giving visual feedback.
- When a muscle is worked through its full range, maximum training benefit is gained.
- The Inspiratory muscles are trained from residual volume to total lung capacity
Outline of the Program
- Initial Fitness Testing– With an exercise test on a Monark Cycle Ergometer, your heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation response to exercise, calculated peak VO2 and MET levels and perceived exertion levels will be measured.
- Body Composition– BMI, body fat percent, lean muscle mass percent and body water percent (hydration status) will be measured.
- Training Session Outline- The computer based IMT program increases the work rate by reducing resting periods.
- Training Sessions– 30 minute sessions, 3 times a week for 8 weeks-total of 24 sessions.
- Final Fitness Test– repeat all testing done at the beginning for comparison of results.
